Summary
The problem — mitosis or amitosis — is investigated with autoradiographic (3H-Thymidine) and electronicmicroscopic methods in new-born, juvenile and adult rabbits. It could be demonstrated that chondrocytes divide by mitosis only in new-born animals and in the early juvenile phase. During the period of growth mitosis decreases while more amitosis in chondrocytes could be observed. In new-born animals the cell-division is iniciated by the surface cartilage and decreases down to the middle layers of cartilage. Older but still immature rabbits showed the most intensive activity of cell-division in regions next to the surface of articular cartilage. In adult animals neither mitotical nor amitotical cell-divisions could be seen. The consequences of these findings concerning the different chances of healing of injured cartilage in immature and adult animals are discussed.
