Ultrastructure of Cocconeis diminuta pantocsek

Summary

The ultrastructural morphology of Cocconeis diminuta, a small benthic diatom, is described. It has been found to possess a typical naviculoid organisation, and does not differ significantly from other species examined with the electron microscope. The pseudoraphe, frequently regarded as an important taxonomic criterion, has been found to be a variable feature in C. diminuta and its significance in this regard appears doubtful. Special reference is made to the substructure of the pyrenoid, since it appears to possess a crystal lattice that is similar in structure to the one described in the dinoflagellate Prorocentrum micans.
