Summary
The pigments of some green algae have been identified and quantitatively determined by methods discussed in Hager and Stransky (1970).
-
1.
All the examined species of green algae contain chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b in changing quantities.
-
2.
Of the carotenes only \ga- and \gb-carotene are present. In a special case \gg-carotene appears in Chara and Pedinomonas, in the latter organism in relatively great quantities.
-
3.
The abundant xanthophyll of the green algae is lutein, which is present in each alga.
-
4.
Cryptoxanthin, cryptoxanthin-mono-epoxid and lutein-epoxid are only found in smaller quantities.
-
5.
From all the green algae two stereoisomeric forms of neoxanthin can be isolated.
-
6.
Several green algae contain a xanthophyll, which has been characterized as 3,3\t',4(?)-trihydroxy-\ga-carotene. It appears only in such algae, which are able to form secondary carotenoids during nitrogen starvation.
This pigment reveals a certain similarity with the so called loroxanthin investigated by Aitzetmüller et al. (1969). Yet the position of a OH-group seems to be different.
-
7.
Secondary carotenoids especially astacin are found within some of the examined organisms of the following families: Chlamydomonadaceae, Oocystaceae, Scenedesmaceae and Hydrodictyaceae.
-
8.
Species of the order Siphonales, which (according to Kleinig and Egger, 1967b; Strain, 1965; Kleinig et al., 1969) contain siphonaxanthin and the xanthophyll ester siphonein, were not investigated. The only species studied from this group, namely Protosiphon, does not contain these pigments.
-
9.
In the xanthophyll cycle of the green algae the pigments violaxanthin, antheraxanthin and zeaxanthin are involved.
-
10.
The chlorophyll-less mutant Chlorella vulgaris 211-11 h/20 forms no epoxides; no light-dependent xanthophyll interconversions are detectable.
-
1.
Alle untersuchten Grünalgen besitzen Chlorophyll a und Chlorophyll b in wechselnden Mengenverhältnissen.
-
2.
