Tolerance for aniseikonia

Summary

The presentation of cyclofusion plates in a modified synoptophore enables cyclovergence and cyclodisparity to be measured separately. The maximum cyclodisparity which results from the presentation of a pattern of horizontal lines is determined by the minimum vertical diplopia threshold in the field of binocular vision. Measurements taken on 10 subjects gave a mean threshold of 6.3% of the perimetric angle. Thus, the cyclofusion method also produced a mean tolerance for aniseikonia of 6–7%. While the vertical diplopia thresholds measured in various subjects and under various test circumstances are relatively constant, the horizontal diplopia thresholds display wide differences; these are due in part to inter-individual variations, but are also governed by the test circumstances and the possibilities which these afford for stereoscopic vision.
