Summary
A method for evaluation of central nervous system depressant activity utilizing potentiation of barbital-Na hypnosis is described. Predetermined doses of barbital-Na which produce hypnosis in 20% of mice or rats (HD 20) are given intraperitoneally with and without treatment with test compounds. The dose of a compound required to produce hypnosis in 80% of the animals (HD 80) may be a useful index for quantitating CNS depressant activity.
A simple screening method for CNS depressants using the HD 20 of barbital-Na with an arbitrarily chosen dose of the test compound and subjecting the results to a chi-square analysis for significance is described.
