Summary
-
1.
The pedicel of May Flies contains two rings of sensilla; an outer ring composed of campaniform sensilla and an inner ring with mononematic scolopidia.
-
2.
Most of the mononematic scolopidia are innervated by two sense cells. The innermost scolopidia, as a rule, are supplied with three sense cells. The extracellular caps are open distally and are formed like hollow, obtuse cones.
-
3.
Each campaniform sensillum and each mononematic scolopidium is comprised of three enveloping cells; the dendritic sheath cell (scolopale cell), the trichogen cell (cap cell = attachment cell), and the tormogen cell (accessory cell).
-
4.
The phylogenetic origin of the mononematic scolopidia of the inner ring is discussed. The scolopidia of the inner ring are possibly homologous with those of the Johnston organ.
-
5.
Electronmicroscopic observations of the molting process of mononematic scolopidia are published for the first time. Richard (1957) has confirmed that the cap is not lost at ecdysis.
Zusammenfassung
-
1.
