Summary
The microscopic structure of the retinae of two species of nocturnal gecko, Hemidactylus turcicus and Tarentola mauritanica is described. The visual cells and general retinal structure in these two species are very similar to those already described for other species of nocturnal gecko. There appears to be no structural basis for retinal summation in these retinae and other possible means of achieving the high sensitivity found by Dodt and Walther are discussed.
