Summary
The fine structure of the peritrophic membrane and of the anterior wall of the midgut which is involved in its formation was investigated in the larvae of the midge Chironomus strenzkei. The gut epithelium consists of four cell types: 1. large E.R.-rich cells containing in addition electrondense secretory granules, 2. mitochondria rich cells with deep microvilli-bearing infoldings of the apical plasmalemma, 3. a few slender cells of presumably endocrine function, 4. small cells bearing a short brush-border and a fiber-containing thickening. The two layered peritrophic membrane consists of an outer part which is perforated by wide hexagonal pores and an inner part being built up by longitudinally orientated fibers. The outer honey-comb-texture constitutes itself well outside the brushborder of the E. R.-rich cells. Thus the assumption of the microvilli being the mould for the perforated peritrophic membrane cannot be substantiated by our observations. In contrast to the “mould-theory” as far as the villi are concerned is also the finding that their diameters by far exceed that of the pores.
