Summary
Clinical, bioelectric, polygraphic, psychological and chemical observations of two young men were taken during an experiment of enforced sleep deprivation of 114 and 112 hours duration and sleep recovery.
-
1.
Physical examination revealed no differences during the period of deprivation. Neurological symptoms (nystagmus, tremor) were barely noticeable, but considerable mental changes were seen (slowing of reactions, distrust, irritability, visual and acoustic hallucinations, periodical amnesia).
-
2.
Bio-electrical recordings corresponded to those of lower vigilance and psychological tests showed lower awareness and efficiency in complex matters (such as adaptation to new situations, concentration and mental strain). Sexual functions were reduced.
-
3.
Before the experiment variations in the sleep and the physical characteristics of the subject were observed.
-
4.
Laboratory tests showed a further increase of transaminase serum in one subject, but its initial value could not become clinically manifest. In both subjects the level of serum albumin was slightly reduced whereas serum globulin and lymphocytes increased slightly.
-
5.
The recuperative sleep after the enforced sleep deprivation was deeper and the initial phase before synchronized deep sleep fifty or sixty times shorter than before deprivation. The percentage of REM-dream phases rose from 20% to 40°/s in one test subject from 30% to 37% in the other. Erections and movements during the REM stage were diminished during sleep recovers compared to normal sleep.
