Summary
In three female and three male castrated pigs the hypophysial stalk is examined by means of electron microscopy. The number of pituicytes is relatively small; it seems that their contact with the neural tissue is not very close. The special blood vessels are characterized by vast complexes of basement membrane which enclose perivascular spaces of various dimensions. It is suggested that these complexes play a special part in the liberation and transportation of the neurosecretory substances. The vessels are lined by an epithelium that is partly continuous and partly porous. End-feet of axons are found at the neural side of the basement membrane complexes; because of the presence of mitochondria and small vesicles they show a synapsis-like structure. Two types of neurosecretory granules are found in the infundibulum: smaller granules (diameter c. 100 mμ) are predominantly seen in the axons and their end-feet; larger granules (diameter c. 180 mμ) predominantly occur in the Herring bodies.
Herring-bodies are found exclusively in the zona interna; they either border the basement membrane of the special vessels or are inclosed in branchings of the latter.
The zona interna also contains myelinated axons, which are free of secretion. A few ependyma cells exhibit osmiophilic droplets which may contain neurosecretion.
Osmiophilic granules which resemble those of the tractus supraoptico-hypophyseus are found in the zona externa.
