Summary

The nucleotide sequence of the gene for the 32,000 dalton thylakoid membrane protein from Nicotiana tabacum has been determined. This gene is located 535 base pairs (bp) away from the inverted repeat on the right margin of the large single-copy region of the chloroplast DNA. The coding region contains 1059 bp (353 codons). The deduced amino acid sequence is identical with those of spinach and Nicotiana debneyi. Transcription of this gene starts 85 bp upstream from the ATG codon and terminates 91–95 bp downstream from the TAA stop codon. A strong homology was observed in the promoter sequences between the genes for the 32,000 dalton protein and the large subunit of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase.
