Analysis of centromere co-orientation in a rye-wheat derivative by means of C-banding

Abstract

The orientation of centromeres of rye chromosomes in a rye-wheat derivative involved in bivalent and quadrivalent associations was analyzed using the C-banding technique. It is concluded that i) the four configurations (Adj-I, Adj-II, Alt-I, Alt-II) of the quadrivalent association appear with different frequencies, ii) the number and distribution of chiasmata (expressed as bound arms) affect the quadrivalent configurations, iii) affinity phenomena are not detected since centromeres belonging to different associations not mechanically connected co-orientate independently, being distributed at random to the cell poles. Consequently, the predominance of alternate configurations over the adjacent ones cannot be attributed to centromeric affinity.
