Inter-strain transfer of a pesticide-resistant marker in the N2-fixing cyanobacterium Nostoc muscorum

Summary

Co-culture of two strains of the cyanobacterium Nostoc muscorum, separately resistant to the pesticide dithane or blitox, results in the appearence of doubly resistant mutants at a frequency some 100 times higher than when the strains are separately cultured. This strongly suggests the occurrence of a gene transfer mechanism for pesticide-resistance in this organism.
