Elektronenmikroskopische Beobachtungen am Krönchenbesatz der spezifischen Zellelemente in der Wandung des Saccus vasculosus von Scylliorhinus caniculus, Raja spec., Anguilla vulgaris und Cottus bubalis sprechen in Bestätigung früherer Mitteilungen zugunsten der Auffassung, die Krönchenzellen seien sekretorisch aktiv. Der Ansicht von Kurotaki (1961), die Krönchenzellen seien den Sinneszellen der Retina und des Cortischen Organes vergleichbare Rezeptoren, steht die Tatsache entgegen, daß sich im Inneren der Endkölbchen ein Prozeß vollzieht, der zu ihrer Umgestaltung zu gekammerten Gebilden und zu Blasen führt. Diese Blasen müssen eine flüssige oder leicht lösliche Substanz enthalten. Es kann ferner nicht übersehen werden, daß im Saccuslumen kolloidale Substanzen vorkommen, welche wie die Endkölbchen des Krönchenbesatzes Reaktionen auf saure Mukopolysaccharide geben.

Beobachtungen am lebensfrisch untersuchten Saccusepithel eines marinen Teleostiers mit wohlentwickelten Krönchenzellen (Cottus bubalis) ergeben keine Anhaltspunkte für das Bestehen einer Motilität der Krönchencilien nach Art der bekannten Flimmerbewegung.
