Isolation experiments consisting of transplantation of the early chick neural tube to the coelomic cavity showed a complete differentiation capacity of the neural epithelium cells.

When the neural tube cells were kept in tissue culture, low-differentiated epithelial cells migrated in young stages. These cells are probably derived from the neural epithelium. It could be observed that these cells undergo differentiation into neuroglia cells and neurons even in cultures from young stages, if they are kept long enough. The frequency of differentiation, however, increases considerably with increasing age of the donor, to reach 100% at a stage when migrated cells are present in the donor brain.

It is concluded, that a premorphological differentiation occurs within the neural epithelium. This differentiation process is probably started at the activation process of the neural induction and is followed by a morphologic differentiation period when the cells have left the neural epithelium. The time of lateral migration from the neural epithelium may possibly somehow be correlated to a certain stage of the premorphologic differentiation.
