Morphology and phylogenetic relationships of the neotenic interstitial polychaete Apodotrocha progenerans n.gen., n.sp. (Annelida)

Summary

Apodotrocha progenerans n.gen., n.sp. from tidal beaches or shallow waters on the east coast of the USA (Massachusetts) is a gonochoristic interstitial polychaete (length ca. 600 μm; six trunk segments), that lacks parapods, setae, and fleshy appendages, but has three characteristic caudal cirri. The habitus greatly resembles a larval stage of the Dorvilleidae, a family with which it also shares several anatomical features as revealed by ultrastructural investigations. Great similarities to the so-called archiannelids belonging to the Dinophilidae are also apparent, thus demonstrating the close phylogenetic relationship of the latter family to the Dorvilleidae.
