Abstract
A method for decorating dislocations in forsterite (Mg2SiO4) is presented. It gives a complete description of the dislocation structures in this silicate and thus improves our understanding of its plastic properties. It consists of diffusing ferrous iron into the forsterite lattice, and then in oxidizing in air. Decorating particles form on the dislocation lines, making them visible through thin sections. All the dislocations are decorated. Recovery is negligible at the temperatures used for both diffusion and oxidation. As a first important result, the microstructures associated with (010) [100] and (001) [100] slip systems are described and an interpretation is suggested.
