Summary

The white rot fungus Phanerochaete chrysosporium Burdsall degraded DDT [1,1-bis(4-chlorophenyl)-2, 2,2-trichloroethane] in submerged agitated cultures. The ability of the fungus to metabolize this persistent environmental pollutant is not dependent on the formation of its extracellular lignin-degrading enzyme system.
