Summary
Experiments on rabbits and dogs have shown, that by administration of g-strophanthin the potassium concentration of blood decreases, that of sodium increases. Accordingly, a reduced amount of sodium and an increased amount of potassium has been found in the urine. The blood chlorid and sugar level of rabbits is augmented by g-strophanthin. The hyperchloremy in dogs is less pronounced and the blood sugar level tends to decline. Because of the unstability of chloride excretion it was impossible to ascertain any charakteristic changes in the chloride content of the urine on g-strophanthin administration. The action of g-strophanthin on the salt metabolism seems to corroborate the view of Zwemer et al that on adrenalectomized animals the life prolonging effect of g-strophanthin is based on its cortin like action.
