Abstract
An analytical solution to the magnetohydrostatic equations is presented that generalises a solution due to Birn et al. (1978) to include the effect of gravity. There exist two solutions to the same boundary conditions for small base pressures. If the base pressure exceeds a critical value, then ‘non-equilibrium’ may occur and initiate a two-ribbon flare.
