Summary

Chlamydomonas reinhardtii cells immobilized in Ba-alginate beads provide a stable and effective system for photoproducing ammonium from nitrite in a culture medium containing l-methionine-d,l-sulphoximine. The process was studied in either air-lift, fluidized or packed-bed reactors, the last one providing the most suitable system with a volumetric activity of 2700 μmol NH sup4inf+ ·1−1 per hour.
