An analysis of the change in perceptual size of the retinal image at correction of ametropia

Summary

Correction of ametropia with common eye glasses brings always on a difference in size between the blurred image on the retina in the uncorrected eye and the sharp one in the corrected eye. It increases with the distance between the correcting lens and the cornea. It is smaller when the ametropia depends on deviation from the normal of the refractive power of the lens than if it depends on the refractive power of the cornea or the length of the axis of the eye. This phenomenon brings on aniseiconia at the correction of anisometropia and explains the discomfort often produced at the correction of anisometropia and astigmatism.

La grandeur de l'image rétinienne indistincte de l'oeil amétrope non-corrigé diffère toujours de la grandeur de l'image nette de cet oeil corrigé avec des verres simples. Cette différence augmente avec la distance cornée - verre correcteur. Elle est plus petite en cas d'une amétropie à cause du cristallin qu'en cas d'une amétropie causée par la cornée ou par la longueur de l'oeil. Le résultat de ce phénomène est une aniseiconie en cas d'une anisométropie corrigée. Elle explique le malaise dont se plaignent souvent des patients anisométropes ou astigmates après correction.

Korrektur einer Amétropie mit gewöhnlichen Gläsern führt immer zu einer Größendifferenz zwischen dem verschwommenen Bild des unkorrigierten und dem scharfen Bild des korrigierten Auges. Sie nimmt mit dem Abstand Cornea-korrigierendes Glas zu. Sie ist kleiner, wenn die Amétropie durch die Linse entstanden ist, als wenn sie durch die Hornhaut oder durch die Achsenlänge des Auges zustande kommt. Dieses Phaenomen führt zu Aniseikonie bei Korrektur einer Anisométropie und erklärt das Unbehagen, das Patienten oft nach Kortektur einer Anisométropie oder eines Astigmatismus empfinden.
