Sulphate and nitrate related to acidity in rainwater

Abstract

In recent years rainwater acidity and composition have been widely monitored in many networks and projects. Some authors have attempted to identify which substances and sources most influence rain acidity in practice. This paper shows that sulphate and nitrate in rainwater vary systematically with the acidities of the samples from certain rural sites and that there are major differences between strong- and weakly-acid rainwaters. Weakly acid samples can modify on standing and so special care is required in attempts to use them to identify sources. Some differences have been noted between samples from Europe and from the NE United States.
