Abstract

Electrical resistivity and optical absorption of PVA doped with both CoCl2 and NiCl2 have been studied. It was found that the conduction was mainly ionic in nature between 20 and 120 ‡C. The resistivity decreased with an increase in the nickel content, indicating the role of transition metal ions. The compensation law was found to be valid for the investigated samples. Optical absorption spectra were obtained in the range 4000–50 000cm −1 and analysed in terms of d-d transitions. It is concluded that nickel is in the divalent state and is ionically co-ordinated. Moreover, nickel is acted upon by an octahedral symmetrical field.
