Two-dimensional Fermi liquids

Stistical mechanics of submonolayer helium films on graphite substrates is conventionally described by site localization models. However, there is evidence from dynamical experiments that the atoms are highly mobile, which leads the authors to believe that a solid state band model might be a more appropriate description. Here Landau Fermi liquid theory for finite temperatures is applied as a test case. It is shown to give the correct asymptotic behavior in both high- and low-temperature limits. By an appropriate quasiparticle interaction simplification, Landau Fermi liquid theory gives good agreement with magnetic susceptibility data for 3He films on Grafoil for all temperatures. The possible inclusion of the substrate is also discussed.
