On the limit of plastic deformation in compression of circular cylinders

Abstract

Experiments were conducted to determine the effect of interface friction and speciment geometry on the useful ductile flow limit of 1100 aluminum and 1095 steel at room temperature. The tests consisted of measuring the equatorial strains during simple upsetting of circular cylinders. From the measured strains the surface stress components were calculated. All occurrences of fracture were observed to be the normal type. In some cases no surface cracks were observed and a possible explantation is given in the paper.

Résumé

Des essais ont été exécutés en vue de déterminer l'effet de la friction à l'interface poinçon-matière et de la géométrie de l'échantillon sur la limite utile de l'écoulement ductile d'alliage d'aluminium 1100 et d'acier 1095 à la température ambiante. Les essais ont consisté à mesurer les déformations équatoriales au cours de l'écrasement simple de cylindres à génératrice circulaire. A partir de ces mesures, on a calculé les composantes de la tension de surface. Tous les cas de rupture qui ont été observés avaient un caractère normal. Dans certains cas, on ne distingua pas de fissures en surface, et une explication possible en est fournie.

Zusammenfassung

Der Bericht beschreibt Versuchezur Bestimmung des Effektes der Übergangsflächenreibung und der Probengeometrie auf die ausnützbare geschmeidige Fließgrenze von Aluminium 1100 und Stahl 1095 bei Zimmertemperatur. Die Versuche bestanden aus der Messung der equatorialen Verformung während einfacher Aufsetzung von kreisförmigen Zylindern. Von den gemessenen Verformungen ausgehend wurden die Komponente der Oberflächen-spannungen gerechnet. Alle gefundene Brüche waren vom normalen Typ. In einigen Fällen wurden keine Oberflächenrisse beobachtet und eine mögliche Erläuterung wird im Bericht gegeben.
