Periodic edge cracks of unequal length in a semi-infinite tensile sheet

Abstract

A two-dimensional stress analysis for the treatment of periodic edge cracks of unequal length in an elastic half plane under tension is presented. The method is based on the use of selected polynomial mapping approximations derived from a series expansion of the exact mapping function and the application of the Muskhelishvili analysis. The case of edge cracks equally spaced, alternating in length, and normal to the edge is considered in detail. Additional results are presented for the case of oblique cracks of constant spacing and equal depth. The data predicts a critical stage of crack growth based on the physical phenomena of crack closure
