Oligochaete cocoon remains as evidence of past lake pollution

Abstract

Cores taken in L. Orta, a large, deep ammonia and copper polluted lake in North Italy, revealed the presence of sub-fossil cocoons of a tubificid (Spirosperma ferox) and of a lumbriculid (Stylodrilus lemani?) in sediment layers corresponding to a period prior to the beginning of heavy industrial pollution (1926). The findings point out the possible use of sub-fossil cocoons of some aquatic Oligochaeta to indicate past lake conditions.
