Abstract
A wave model and a vertical silt model are developed for shallow lakes and both were applied to Lake Marken in the Netherlands. The results of the wave model serve as input for the silt model. The silt model calculates the suspended silt concentration at several depths at a certain location. The water column is divided in compartments and the suspended silt concentration can be divided into a maximum of seven fractions. It is also possible to divide the top layer of the lake bottom into 25 slices with different time-dependent soil-physical properties.
The optimization procedure of the silt model showed the importance of knowledge of the soil-physical properties of the top layer of the bottom. In general, not much is known about this layer and Lake Marken is no exception. The calibrated silt model gave good results for 3 sites in Lake Marken.
