Summary
A number of commensal organisms in the mucous of the rotifer Conochilus unicornis is described. The following species were observed: Vorticella conochili Stokes, Vorticella conosoma Stokes, Amoeba radiosa Dujardin, Amoeba gracilis Greeff, Amoeba mucicola nov. spec., and Lyngbya endophytica Elenk. et Hollerbach.
This is the third time Vorticella conosoma and V. conochili have been recorded since their description in 1889 by Stokes. Both species are now known from America and two times from Europe. The other species are recorded for the first time as being commensals in the mucous of Conochilus unicornis.
The connection of the occurrence of the commensal organisms with the periodicity of the rotifer is discussed.
A new habitat for Phormidium mucicola Huber et Naumann is given.
