Summary

Kala Rata, a salt tolerant variety of rice, is cultivated in brakish-water paddy fields of western India. The silty soil is poor in exchangeable Ca, but it has relatively more soluble salts. The leaves of Kala Rata, grown from saline and sweet water, and those of a salt-sensitive variety, such as Dodga, EK-70, and Zinia-149, have been analysed for mineral elements. By keeping the internal level of K much higher than Na, it is observed that Kala Rata, appears to withstand salinity. It also appears to develop a salt exclusion mechanism Antagonism of Na and Ca is marked by the poor Ca in the leaves. Again, salt stress effect seems to affect the Si uptake.
