III. Plant-soil water relations in almond during the growing season

Summary

Some parameters pertaining to plant-soil water relations of almond trees under certain irrigation schemes were studied. Daily and seasonal fluctuations of transpiration rate, relative turgidity, osmotic concentration of leaf sap and number of foliage carried by trees were mainly investigated. Computed total water loss seem to be a function of the foliage amount carried by trees rather than the transpiration rate. Osmotic potential of leaf sap does not respond to changes in relative turgidity. Irrigation generally resulted in a partial shedding of leaves which indicates that irrigation under the prevailing conditions is a waste of water and labour.
