Abstract
The future of the Internet is the metaverse, and therefore, we need avatars; in other words, our digital selves that encapsulate our digital identities to represent us visually in this virtual universe. Avatars will be in connection with digital memories and user experiences. Various game and pre-metaverse platforms already use platform-specific avatars. However, there was a need for a cross-platform and personalized avatar environment to pave the way for interoperability, which is essential for the future of metaverse technologies. In this scope, within this chapter, the avatar concept and 3D avatars are explained. Then, the authors describe Ready Player Me (RPM) and how it enables the use of avatars on different platforms. Later on, we predict the future of the metaverse and avatars. Finally, this chapter concludes with an extended discussion on how to build a more open and connected metaverse.
