Natural Polymeric Materials based Drug Delivery Systems in Lung Diseases

Abstract

Natural polymers have been widely studied as the carriers for the transfer of medications and different therapeutic molecules, which have attracted significant attention. Natural polymers’ inherent benefits in extraordinary biocompatibility, controlled enzyme degradation, particular interactions with several biomolecules, and simple modification endow them with versatility in drug delivery. In lung diseases, using natural polymers as drug delivery methods can enhance the effectiveness of different drugs because of their benefits associated with sustained drug discharge, targeting efficacy, and patient compliance. In this context, several natural polymers have been explored to match this demand, including chitosan, polysaccharides, alginate, and gelatin. Moreover, the drug delivery system produced by natural polymer derivatives has been offered to focus on the chemical and morphological alterations, the decorations of smart stimuli-responsive or targeted motifs, and so on, which improved the delivery and treatment effectiveness. More intelligent and particular delivery approaches have been developed, and more multifunctional natural polymer-based carriers are used in the future. This chapter contains the different progressions in natural polymers that are used in lung diseases, including lung cancer and respiratory diseases. The section at the end also shows the future of natural polymer-based drug delivery systems in combating lung diseases.
