Suicidal Ideation in Adolescents—A Transcultural Analysis

  • Chapter
  • First Online:
Handbook of Suicidal Behaviour

Abstract

Suicidal thoughts might emerge in any individual at different stages of his/her life. However, adolescents are more prone to experience suicidal thoughts than other age groups, even much older ones. Though the severity of suicidal ideation can vary and takes time to develop, it is still a disturbing stage as it precedes actual suicide. International teams of researchers have pointed out to different mediators and moderators of suicidal ideation during adolescence. Among them physical abuse, exposure to bullying and victimization, depression and anxiety, peer suicide ideation, life stress, problematic internet use, sleep problems, risky behaviour, lack of attachment within family and others. In this review existing publications on suicidal ideation in adolescents are analysed from the point of view of possible cultural differences that determine peculiarities of this phenomenon in modern societies confronted by modernization and information technologies pressure, with implication for both mental health professionals and child care providers. Though absolute figures of prevalence of suicidal thoughts in adolescents should be taken with caution, data from China, South Korea and Taiwan, as well as a general number of publications from these countries reflect high prevalence and concerns among researchers. Conflict of cultures and suicide exposure by mass media, among other factors, may contribute to this tendency. Not only eliminating of risk factors like bullying and sexual and physical abuse but also wider measures that may promote meaning in life in adolescents are important within the prevention context.
