Abstract

Recently, in Republic of Korea, the PLC (Power Line Communication) technology is getting a limelight as a foundation technology for the Smart Metering field, and for that reason, we’ve implemented a similar foundation technology applicable to the Realtime Smart Metering System which enables remote monitoring and management of power usages using the PLC. In this paper, the PLC-utilized remote power metering and monitoring and control of power usages of respective power supplies have been implemented for the system. In addition, In-home headcount monitoring algorithm is proposed in an attempt to achieve efficient power usage management. It is expected that the proposed foundation technology will eventually become a foundation technology for the Internet of Things (IoT). We also anticipate that the technology could be useful for the establishment of an adequate power saving scheme with continuous power usage monitoring and will provide better user-convenience by controlling the power remotely and efficiently. Furthermore, since it provides relatively easy addition or removal of devices within the household, the system will have wider scalability.
