Abstract

The history of in vitro plant culture spans nearly a century. Early attempts (Haberlandt, 1902) were unsuccessful; isolated tissues did not survive more than a few weeks. While Haberlandt’s techniques were successfully applied to animal tissues (Carrel, 1912), it was not until more than 30 years later that researchers reported encouraging results in plants (Gautheret, 1934; White, 1934).
