Abstract
Recent years have witnessed a resurgence of research into the economics of trade unionism. The agenda of this research has been, largely, the application of more sophisticated econometric analysis to the study of the effects of trade unions on economic variables (such as relative wages, wage inflation, etc.). A survey of this recent research (Johnson, 1975) noted the point:
[T]he problem of modeling trade union behaviour has proved to be virtually intractable. [Pp. 23–24]
[M]y major conclusion is that while little progress has been made in modeling the behavior of trade unions ... there has been a great deal of sound empirical work on the economic effects of unionism. [P. 27]
