Empathy, Empathy Training and the Regulation of Aggression in Elementary School Children

  • Chapter
Aggression in Children and Youth

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASID,volume 17))

Abstract

The rationale to develop a psychoeducational program to train aggressive children in empathic skills for the purpose of regulating aggressive behavior and promoting positive social behavior grew out of a long-standing research interest and program concerned with the structure and functions of empathy (N. Feshbach & Roe, 1968; N. Feshbach, 1975, 1978, 1982). The Empathy Training Program, the main focus of this presentation, was designed in conjunction with a series of field studies carried out in a number of elementary schools in Los Angeles (Feshbach & Feshbach, 1977; N. Feshbach, 1980).
