Part of the book series: Social Indicators Research Series ((SINS,volume 20))

Abstract

The major trends and measurement issues for quality of life assessment in children and adolescents for the purposes of health care and problem prevention are reviewed. Next, the Multidimensional Students’ Life Satisfaction Scale, a self-report quality of life scale appropriate for children and youth, is discussed. This multidimensional scale was designed to measure general life satisfaction and satisfaction within five specific domains (Self, Family, Friends, School, and Living Environment) among students of ages 8–18. Its rationale, development, psychometric properties, and applications to health care assessment of children and youth are outlined with an emphasis on the incremental validity of quality of life assessments. Future research directions are also discussed.
