Abstract
Since the mid 1980s, the Greek waste regime has undergone major changes instigated mainly by the directives and structural funds of the European Union. Present economic resources allocated for waste management have reached an all time high of approximately 1 billion ECU. New waste treatment facilities are emerging, the uncontrolled dumping areas are being closed down, recycling programs are being organized, and numerous sanitary landfills constructed. This procedure, however, is not devoid of problems and drawbacks. The most characteristic case is the waste management plan for Athens, which has been under discussion and continuous revision over the past twenty years.
