The Synthesis, Characteristics and Applications of Layered Double Hydroxides

  • Chapter
Multifunctional Mesoporous Inorganic Solids

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIC,volume 400))

Abstract

The properties and applications of layered double hydroxides (hydrotalcitelike compounds) are described. Particular areas of application for these materials which are considered include heterogeneous catalysis and photochemistry. The possibility of incorporating large inorganic and organic species to yield pillared solids akin to those studied for clays is outlined. The surface properties — important to catalytic applications — of the parent and calcined materials are described. In particular, results are given with respect to the use of calcined layered double hydroxides in the base-catalysed synthesis of glycol ethers. Their possible use in the controlled solid-state photochemical reaction of cinnamic acid is also discussed.
