Abstract

In this paper I shall study the fate of the Aristotelian theory of modality in the hands of scholastic philosophers and theologians —how they used this theory, how they modified it, and how they criticized it. By and large, I shall consider the problem from the vantage point of the so-called Principle of Plenitude:

  • (P) no genuine possibility can remain forever unrealized.
