Human Adaptation to Life in Antarctica

Biogeography and Ecology in Antarctica

Part of the book series: Monographiae Biologicae ((MOBI,volume 15))

Abstract

The Antarctic is a geographically and ecologically well defined area and is unique in many respects. It is the only land mass that has had no inhabitants up to the turn of this century, and it still has no settled population. Man is a newcomer and a short time visitor. Only a few men have spent more than three years of their life on this continent, which was first sighted in 1820 by Fabian von Bellingshausen, two days before Edward Bransfield discovered Graham Land. Bransfield was the first to chart a portion of the Antarctic mainland4. The Antarctic Peninsula (Graham Land) was also seen by Nathaniel Palmer at this time.
