Lithium treatment of mania and depression over one hundred years

  • Chapter
Current Trends in Lithium and Rubidium Therapy

Abstract

John F.J. Cade, the Australian psychiatrist (1912–1980) (23) became famous within the entire world of psychiatry when in 1949 he, apparently as the first one, published results which showed the lithium ion to possess therapeutic properties against mania (8). His trial was open and uncontrolled and comprised a limited number of severely ill, hospitalized, psychiatric patients. His results proved lithium to be thera-peutically effective in all ten manic patients, while in six patients with dementia praecox there was a recordable but unsatisfactory effect, and in three chronically depressed, psychotic patients there was no effect at all.
