Abstract
It must be unusual, possibly unique, for a scientific conference to start with a paper which is essentially not scientific but social. I applaud the organisers most heartily for their choice of keynote subject. Scientific research can never be an end in itself. It must always have as its objective the satisfying of a human need, directly or indirectly, perceived or as yet unperceived by the beneficiaries.
