Abstract

Scientific knowledge of the pharmacology of drugs is not always applied in the clinical use of drugs for pain where empiricism and misconception persist. Common pitfalls in drug medication for pain are briefly discussed. Various classes of drugs presently available for patients in pain are described with reference to their correct use, side effects, and misuse, as documented through the daily experience at the Emory Pain Control Center. Detoxification programs are described and a guideline for the use of drugs in chronic pain states is proposed.
