Abstract

The study of the characteristic absorption bands arising from various types of hydrocarbon structures has produced a number of reliable correlations between the band positions and the types of grouping present. Of these, the correlations involving C—H stretching and bending modes are the most specific, but correlations involving skeletal C—C frequencies are also available for certain types of branched-chain structures. The C—H stretching mode absorptions are especially useful in differentiating saturated and unsaturated materials and, when combined with a study of the deformation modes, it is also possible to obtain an approximate indication of the proportions of CH3, CH2 and CH groups present in hydrocarbons.
