Nitrogen management and environmental and crop quality

Nitrogen in Soils of China

Part of the book series: Developments in Plant and Soil Sciences ((DPSS,volume 74))

Abstract

Nitrogen pollution of the environment is a problem of great concern, and many international symposia on this topic have been held since 1970 (e.g. IAWPR 1975; Giorgini and Zingales 1986; Rosswall 1978). In China, a symposium on ‘Nitrogen pollution and nitrogen cycling in the environment’ was held in Dalian, reviewing the progress in the related research fields in China (EBESIN 1983). This chapter will discuss the problems for environmental quality caused by N loss from fertilizer applications to field crops, their counter measures, and the interrelationships between field N management, crop quality and animal health.
