Abstract
Turkmenistan is one of the five independent states bordering the Caspian Sea. The Caspian Sea basin is a unique natural region with great significance for the economy of the country and for interstate relations. The sea has great influence on regional climate. It smooths the amplitude of fluctuations of the temperature of the whole Caspian region air mass, thereby considerably “softening” the climate. Supplying the atmosphere with an enormous amount of moisture from evaporation, the sea mitigates the influence of the hot deserts of Central Asia. However, the recent rise of the Caspian Sea level, which started in 1978, is fraught with negative ecological, social and economic consequences.
